During this season of reflection and gratitude, Casita Linda wishes to thank you for your generous support. We also wish to tell you briefly about the profound impacts you have had on the lives of so many people in the San Miguel community, many of which may surprise you.
Eighty years ago, Abraham Maslow published his insightful work on the hierarchy of human needs. He explained that none of our needs can be fulfilled unless the most basic of them, including shelter, are met. Your kind support has helped provide shelter for many families. We currently are completing our 138th house, after having built a record eight houses during 2022. Next year, we hope and expect to build 10 more. You have provided shelter for hundreds of lives. But you also have done much more.
Casita Linda, through your generosity, provides counseling, life-skills education, and workshops to the people we serve. We teach stressed and over-extended families about family planning. We counsel families faced with neglect, disrespect, and other types of disfunctions on how to improve their lives. We provide addiction counseling to families in need. We provide guidance on child rearing, nutrition, home care, environmental responsibility, water conservation, and other critical topics. All families face challenges, but the burden of poverty can exacerbate them. The needs of the disadvantaged are acute. Your donations have helped these families cope, grow in love and respect, and thrive. What a wonderful legacy!
On November 19, 2022, La Presita, the community currently served by your donations, presented a play to demonstrate the gratitude of the many you have helped. The presentation was a poignant, genuine expression of thankfulness. For us, it was moving, inspiring, and humbling. We provide some photos below. You can see in the faces of the players the joy you have placed in their hearts, and ours.
Casita Linda is grateful to its Board Members with social services training and experience who help guide these efforts. It is especially grateful to its committed staff, including Magda Perez, our social worker, whose work with these families has fostered such meaningful changes. We are grateful for our volunteers, from nurses to psychologists, and for our partner organizations, such as CASA, a non-profit family planning organization, and Kids for Casita Linda, Blanket Babes, and others. We are grateful for our collaborations with Caminos de Agua and Escuela de Educacion Especial de San Miguel. We also are grateful to Casa de Sierra Nevada, a Belmond Hotel, which donated the venue for this year’s tremendously successful Spirit of Hope fundraiser, and to the 250 attendees and our anonymous donor who underwrote the event, permitting us to raise a record amount of money. More than anything, though, Casita Linda is grateful to you, who have transformed so many lives, in so many ways.
You do more than provide shelter. You help build foundations for better lives. You have infused hearts and spirits with comfort, hope, and confidence. Boys and girls who had been sleeping on dirt floors now have their own bedrooms, and parents have privacy. All have indoor bathrooms complete with showers. Children can study at indoor tables near the warmth of kitchens. In short, you have provided a level of dignity everyone should have. As importantly, the people you are helping are gaining skills for better lives.
Maslow would say you have made possible full, rich, self-actualized lives. We simply say, “thank you for all you do.” You are working wonders.Happy Holidays!
