Wedding industry in SMA has revived to 60% after pandemic

    After the COVID-19 pandemic, the wedding industry in San Miguel has been reactivated by 60%.

    The Director of Tourism in San Miguel de Allende, Tania Castillo, commented that years before 2020, there were up to 400 weddings a year in San Miguel de Allende and currently, there are 900 so far this year 2022, and it is estimated to close at 1,000 wedding events held in the municipality.

    “It is a figure that is quite historic, previously we had approximately 400 weddings a year and now, after the pandemic, we are already reactivated, and to date, we already have 900 weddings so far this year, we can say that we have a 60% progress of reactivation, in this issue of weddings,” said the municipal official.

    “It has grown a lot, in fact, this year in May, we received the award as the best wedding destination nationwide, and we have seen, it had never been seen in San Miguel de Allende, a historical figure of more than 900 weddings a year, it was a number that we set ourselves as an administration, the 1,000 weddings this year, and we already have 900”.

    The Director emphasized that what attracts people and convinces them to get married in San Miguel de Allende, is the gastronomy, the artisans, and above all, the infrastructure of its streets.

    “We have just been named the best smallest city to visit and live in the world by Condé Nast magazine, San Miguel is a city that people come to and fall in love with because of its streets, its delicious gastronomy, the hotel offer, the industry, the wedding planners that attend to you, the artisans, the entire value chain that benefits from the theme of weddings”.

    He informed that 60% of the weddings that take place in San Miguel de Allende, are of foreigners, mainly from Texas and California. The remaining 40% are nationals from states such as Querétaro, the State of Mexico, Jalisco, and Nuevo León.

    He stated that a wedding in San Miguel de Allende can cost from 800,000 pesos to 1 million pesos.

    “When the bride and groom decide to get married in San Miguel de Allende, their wedding costs between 800,000 and 1 million pesos, that is what they spend on a wedding here in San Miguel de Allende”.

    Tania Castillo commented that the economic revenue generated by this industry in San Miguel de Allende is 1 billion pesos per year.

    With the growth of the wedding industry, there are currently up to 80 wedding planners, and 50 venues where events for 50 to 500 people are organized.

    “There is a great variety, 80% hire a local wedding planner because they are the ones who effectively know the whole industry and all the suppliers, and what we try to do, is to hire local people, local suppliers, and local merchants to benefit and that this revenue stays in San Miguel de Allende”.
