2009, 2011, and 2013 have been the most difficult for Morganna Love, so much so that, more than a decade later, her eyes still water at the memory of what happened.
Christian, Gaby, and Liset are the names of the girls who were murdered in those years; for society they were transphobic crimes, for her, it meant that her friends who she considered part of her family were taken away from her.
Although there is currently more openness to diversity, there are still many attacks against the LGBT+ community, which is why, through art, the singer and actress seek to raise awareness in society in order to eradicate violence.
“I had many aggressions and suffered bullying in middle and high school, but after that things started to get better. I still can’t get over the murder of three of my friends, that has been a very complicated part, little by little I have been able to overcome, I went from working in a place where my friends were murdered to becoming one of the 100 most powerful women in Mexico, according to Forbes magazine; that is a sign that everything is possible, that we have to move forward.
“Music has been my salvation, it has allowed me to get out everything I had inside and cry, write everything I could not tell anyone, singing does me a lot of good to move forward, that was survival,” said the 42-year-old artist in an interview.
Motivated to share the love she feels for human beings, the singer originally from San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato joined Alan Summer, a young artist she met in a clothing campaign and the two created the song A(more).
“We are full of music with incorrect messages, even LGBT+ music when we go dancing you hear it say, ‘I’m the bitchiest’, it’s not throwing hate at other artists, but we are full of this part of the war. Morganna and I love each other, we love each other, we have something special and we wanted to share it in a genuine way.
“This song seeks to honor the past of a very strong community, a community that started in a war, with women of color, trans, HIV+; it was very important to honor the past, but also to talk about the present and the future in some way, about the love of where we are going,” she said.
The video clip of the song highlights the value of friendship, including equity. Thanks to this work, Summer was able to overcome some unpleasant memories as a teenager, such as the denial she received from others to belong to a soccer team. And, in Morganna’s case, an openness to a new conversation in which respect prevails.
“It has been clear to me that we can’t stop our lives out of fear, we can’t stop doing what we love or being who we want to be for fear of what might happen, I know we live in a very violent country in the trans community, but for me, it has been that, that they try to travel accompanied all the time.
“I think what we could do as human beings to help trans women, is to talk about these issues with our family, in our work, at school, sometimes it might be embarrassing because people may not like to talk about it, but the more uncomfortable the talk, the better the society,” said the also actress.
The song is already available on digital platforms. The two assured that they will continue to share more music and hope to release a record album that will help minorities.
Summer will focus on his work as a graphic designer and will resume his theater acting plans, while Morgana will soon premiere the film Lluvia, where she will play Florencia and will share credits with Cecilia Suárez, Dolores Heredia, Bruno Bichir, Tiaré Scanda and Arcelia Ramírez, under the direction of Rodrigo García.
