Ser Mujer SMA (sermjujersma.com), San Miguel’s only organization dedicated to the empowerment of women, is proud to present its 8th annual program for International Women’s History Month.  Women’s History Month is an annual March celebration highlighting the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society, and bringing awareness to the challenges that continue to confront women around the world.

In May 2010, the Red Dress Day was established to commemorate indigenous Canadian women killed or missing.  Unfortunately the problem is not limited to indigenous people – it affects women all over the world.  In Mexico, an average of five women disappear every day.  Ser Mujer has joined women’s organizations in North America to gather and display red dresses to bring attention to this situation.

Beginning on March 5 at 5PM, Katie Van Doren will display a month-long installation at the Fabrica Aurora entitled “El Dias Sin Mujeres: Oracion por las Desaparecidas,”  (“The Days Without Women – Honoring the Stolen”), incorporating photos, names of the disappeared women from the state of Guanajuato, an original painting and red dresses.

On March 8, International Women’s Day, all women are invited to create their own red dress tribute at 3 PM at Geek and Coffee.  Over 100 dresses have been donated.  Each dress will have the name of a disappeared woman to be read aloud. The event will be highlighted by the music of local artist, Liah Alonso.  All women are encouraged to wear red to show solidarity with the disappeared women and their families.

Femicide and disappearance of women is one of the most prevalent crimes in Mexico.  To report a missing person, please call the Comision Estatal de Busqueda de Persons at 473-735-3636, ext. 3881 or 3882 (busquedadepersonassg@guanajuato.gob.mx).

On March 14, Ser Mujer will present a workshop on the prevention of violence for girls at Ojala Ninos.  Later in March, a prevention and awareness program will be presented and filmed for the students and teachers at the Victoria Robbins School.

Ser Mujer will present two Zoom talks during March in conjunction with the Universalist Unitarian Fellowship of San Miguel (UUFSMA.org).  Veronica Cruz will speak on March 6 and Jennifer Clement will speak on March 20.  Veronica is the founder of Las Libres, a Guanajuato organization of attorneys dedicated to defending women unjustly convicted of murder after a miscarriage or abortion.  Jennifer Clement is the former and only female president of Pen International and the author of the much-acclaimed novel, “Prayers for the Stolen,” the story of young girls kidnapped in the state of Guererro.  The book has been adapted for the award-winning film, “Noche de Fuego.”

Ser Mujer is a San Miguel de Allende based group of Mexican, American and Canadian women of all ages working in partnership with community-based organizations.  For a complete description of all events, please visit our website at www.sermujersma.com or visit our Ser Mujer Facebook page.
