This morning, Sanmiguelenses and Expats arrived and protested outside of Zeferino Park, to demand a stop to the excessive cutting of trees and mesquite trees in a neighboring area, currently protected by Semarnat and PROFEPA.

As part of the actions to defend the trees and animals in the area, several complaints have already been filed with the Federal Attorney’s Office for Environmental Protection, said Nuria Lara of the civil association “Yo Soy San Miguel” (I am San Miguel).

“For me it is important to highlight the awareness that all this immoderate logging is awakening in the people and neighbors because, in an impressive way it has been documented, everyone has documented how the mesquite trees have been cut down, how the animals themselves are coming down, fleeing from the spaces that are being deforested,” she said.

“People are quite aware, you can see it here, those of us who are with an important commitment, and also something very important, I want to emphasize that, complaints are being made to Profepa, I think that is the most important message, we are sharing the address to make the complaints, these can be either with your name or anonymously and the main objective of this proposal is obviously to invite people to give a yes,” she added.

Nuria said she is aware that at least 15 people filed a complaint with PREFEPA yesterday, others will do so today, and “I also know that there were people who were going to meet with Semarnat at the federal level as well”.

The messages on each of the posters were impressive, reflecting the reality of the current environmental situation in San Miguel de Allende.

Children, teenagers, young people and adults joined the demonstration.

Some posters were pasted on the gates of the main entrance of Zeferino Park.

The area has already suffered great loss of fauna, dozens of mesquites, huizaches, garambullos and nopales were cut down and those that remain are marked, numbered and with holes made with machines.

The sign stating that the area was protected by Semarnat was destroyed and a new one was put up, stating that they have permits from the agency to cut down the trees.
