Summer is the best time to see lavender fields in bloom.

To have in front of you one of the most romantic and colorful sceneries that nature gives us, you don’t need more than traveling a few hours by road. We are referring to the lavender fields you can visit in Mexico, for a weekend of complete relaxation, unforgettable landscapes and lots of souvenirs to take home.

    San Martin Ranch
Located in the town of Santa Rita Tlahuapan, Puebla, it is less than a two-hour drive from Mexico City.

The ranch is surrounded by a forest of pine, cedar and oyamel trees. Plots of 15 varieties of lavender are grown here, which are used to make essential oils and other products.

During a visit, which is free of charge, you can see the distillation process using a still.

During this season the lavender harvest takes place, in which you can participate. For this experience you have to bring a basket and scissors: you will have to cut the flowers by the stem, make bunches and transport them to dry. The next event will be at the end of July, contact the ranch by WhatsApp to reserve (55 4026 4613).

For 60 pesos, a soap-making workshop is offered. There are also ice popsicles and pancakes made with lavender, as well as various souvenirs: aromatizers, scrubs, bath salts and essential oils.

Ask the guides about the “forest bath”: it is a practice of Japanese origin in which you enjoy the natural environment through the senses, and you can experience it in the forest surrounding the ranch.

You are allowed to bring your picnic to eat in the green areas (yes, there are no grills) and the site is pet friendly.

Tip: you can take advantage of your visit to the ranch to go to Val’Quirico, the medieval-style village located in Tlaxcala. It is 40 minutes from here.

    Lavender Ranch
A small oasis located in the semi-desert of Guanajuato, very close to the Magical Town of Mineral de Pozos. If you are traveling from CDMX, it takes approximately four hours to get here.

The flowering season runs from June through August. As you walk through the violet-tinted fields, a guide tells you about the entire process the plant goes through, from germination to distillation. Of course, they give you time to take the obligatory selfies.

The ranch has a store selling products made from lavender, rosemary and sage. In addition to the oils and soaps, you can find hand creams, antibacterial gel and even scented sanitizers.

You can’t leave without stopping by the restaurant, whose dishes involve the harvest. How about a hamburger with lavender bread, a cut of meat seasoned with the plant or an original craft beer that bears this seal? For dessert they serve ice cream and cinnamon rolls.

If you want to spend more than a day in Mineral de Pozos and like to admire the countryside, consider staying in one of the rustic cabins at Rancho de Lavanda. Accommodating two to four guests, they include a kitchen, dining room and living room.

    The Lavender Project
It is located in the community of La Colorada, very close to the Magic Town of Dolores Hidalgo. It takes four hours to get there from CDMX.

It is an initiative born in 2005, after a drought season that hindered agriculture in the region. Since then, lavender has been cultivated to create essential oils and other products. Among the souvenirs available are cushions filled with lavender (the plant is considered a remedy for insomnia), honey, jams, soaps and aromatic sachets for closets or certain corners of the home.

A tour of the lavender fields costs 30 pesos and includes an explanation of the work that is done here.

    La Santísima Trinidad
This is a large real estate development that, in addition to lavender fields, brings together other experiences such as walks through vineyards (whose harvest season coincides with the flowering of the fields, by the way). It is near Dolores Hidalgo, in Guanajuato.

You can start a weekend by taking pictures near the lavender or attending a workshop to learn about the products made from lavender. Afterwards, it is a good idea to visit the vineyards and ask for a tasting or pairing; during the tastings you can also try the olive oil produced here.

The La Santísima Trinidad complex also includes a spa, several trails surrounded by greenery for biking and a Mediterranean-style restaurant. Finally, there is the boutique hotel, with five sophisticated and comfortable rooms.
