In the Plaza de la Soledad (in front of the Oratorio) is this years traditional Corpus Christi Toy Fair.

There are about 11 merchants who offer a variety of toys made of wood, wool, cardboard and foil, which are manual and many of them “didactic”.

Margarita Rodriguez and Maria del Pilar Ramirez, are two of the San Miguel women who participate year after year and preserve the tradition.

“They are toys that were traditionally given to children on Thursday of Corpus Christi, a much older tradition here in San Miguel de Allende than on Three Kings Day, the toy was given to the boy on Thursday of Corpus Christi and the tradition for the girl is the cardboard doll, for the boys the chaco, the sword, the cardboard horse, toys that we have made of wood and furniture to scale, We are exhibiting and urging the people of San Miguel de Allende and our communities to not let this tradition fall and to bring the children to share these toys, to teach them, they are didactic, we have several didactic toys here, so that is what we are inviting them to, it is part of a tradition in San Miguel de Allende”, shared Maria del Pilar.

The tradition dates back almost 400 years, where at that time the country people used to bless their seeds and their animals in the Parish on Thursday of Corpus Christi, where they took the Blessed Sacrament in procession.

They are there from June 10 to 27, waiting for you with their toys of various prices and novelties. They are open from 8 in the morning until the last customer leaves.

“We invite you to visit us, so that this beautiful tradition does not die”, added Margarita.
