Among the festivals, celebrations and even carnivals that take place in some states of the Mexican Republic, the famous mojigangas stand out.

Mojigangas are traditional in San Miguel de Allende and are used in different celebrations. They are puppets made mainly of cardboard, they wear a costume or dress and multiple accessories. They represent an art and a fun structure for all viewers, as they are characterized by exaggerating the features of the character they represent.

These huge puppets usually accompany an callejoneada, creating an excellent atmosphere with mariachis, drinks, bands and typical costumes. On the other hand, they are designed to ridicule public figures, as they are created in an exaggerated way, which gives them a burlesque meaning.

    History of the mojigangas
These creations have their origins in Spain, where they used to be more symmetrical and representative of the aristocracy. Subsequently, after the Spanish conquest of Mexico, the tradition of the giants spread to various parts of the country, such as San Miguel de Allende and Oaxaca, where the tradition was integrated into cultural life and evolved according to their own culture and native materials.

    What is its significance?
The symbology of mojigangas depends on the cultural context and the event in which they are used. In many celebrations, these huge puppets are symbols of fun and joy, evoking a sense of belonging within a community. In addition, they represent a cultural identity, by disguising themselves as historical figures.

However, they are also used to express social or political criticism in a humorous way, functioning as a form of satire or social criticism. On the other hand, prudishness is considered amulets for good fortune or to ward off evil spirits, and has even come to be linked to religious practices and rituals.
