The National Water Commission (CONAGUA) issued an information sheet stating that the discharge of wastewater from subdivisions, hotels, factories, and other developments adjacent to Presa Allende is the main factor in the (rapid) reproduction of the water lily.
It is estimated that to date 20% of the dam’s surface is covered with lily.
Another factor that also contributed to the growth of the weed, according to the national water agency, is the over-fertilization of the area, i.e., farmers supply more fertilizer to their farmland than required and the surplus that is not used by their crops was washed into the reservoir during the rainy season.
They also inform that in the next few days they will initiate actions to inspect the discharge of wastewater, which is having adverse effects on the dam, due to its contribution of pollutant load that favors the growth of the lily, such as urban, industrial, hotel and housing development discharges.
In addition, the correct operation of the treatment plants operating in the area will be reviewed.
And measures will be taken to contain the lirio, to keep it in specific areas, in such a way as to facilitate its extraction, a task carried out by the municipality in collaboration with fishermen in the area.
