    WHAT IS SEPARATIST FEMINISM?

Feminist separatism is the separation in varying degrees from males and their institutions, from relationships, roles, and activities that are defined by males, dominated by males, and that act for the benefit of males. Feminist separatism is a refusal to maintain male privilege and power in any way.

Separatism can take many forms, in varying degrees: including only women in activities or meetings; organizing only in women’s collectives or groups, refusing to participate in any mixed groups; forming women-only cultural, artistic, or sociopolitical groups; not watching or collaborating with male chauvinist media; being rude to misogynistic males; not tolerating any display of male chauvinism before you; refusing to debate issues about women that are not debatable; breaking off or avoiding close or intimate relationships with males; not having sexual relations with males, whatever your sexual preferences.

Feminist separations are rarely sought or maintained in personal or political confines. Most often it is the instinctive rejection and self-care of women in the face of the systematic misogyny that surrounds us.
