  • Auditions for storytelling evening at the San Miguel Festival of Arts to take place May 15 and 16, 2022

    By Stephanie Medlock

An evening of storytelling will be one of the many highlights of San Miguel’s first weeklong Festival of the Arts this August. The storytelling night, which will offer seven stories in English and seven in Spanish, will take place August 16, 2022 at the Teatro Santa Ana.

The theme of the evening is “Ancestors and Destiny.” Storytellers and other members of the community are invited to compose a seven-minute story on that topic. As these will be first-person true stories, storytellers are asked to write about someone in their family tree, whether they knew them or not, whose existence had an effect on who they are today. Judges for the event are looking for a wide range of responses to this topic, so the story can be happy or heartbreaking, serious or playful. All stories must be memorized and delivered without notes.

There is a strict limit of seven minutes to tell this story. Zoom auditions  are scheduled throughout the day on May 15 and 16, 2022. Storytellers not selected for this August’s presentation may still have the opportunity to perform next February. In 2023, organizers hope to have an expanded storytelling event. It will be one of the many independent activities surrounding The San Miguel Writers’ Conference’s return to in person programming.
