20 thousand tons of organic waste arrive at the San Miguel de Allende landfill each year!

Organic waste mixes with other materials that pollute soil, water and air. Meanwhile, soils are degrading because nutrients are taken from it. Most of us have heard that composting is a good thing, but what are the benefits and how does it help?

The Midday Rotary Club welcomed Daniela Del Villar, founder of Composta SMA explained how and why composting is the logical, ethical, humane, sustainable and smart thing to do. By composting our organic waste instead of sending it to the landfill, we help eliminate:

♦ Contamination from mixed waste in landfills.

♦ Leachates that contaminate the aquifer.

♦ Infection of inhabitants who live near the landfills.

♦ Methane gas responsible for global warming.

    The advantages of composting:

♦  Return nutrients to the soil.

♦  Recover the natural habitat of soil microorganisms.

♦  Sequester carbon from the atmosphere.

    ♦  Neutralize pests and pathogens.

♦  Increase moisture retention of the soil.

    ♦  Prevent desertification.

Composta SMA introduces an efficient curbside pickup service for home organic waste. Visit their website compostasma.com for more information. Just by composting instead of throwing it all away, we are solving the trash contamination problem. Daniela says, “It’s easy, it’s logical, let’s do it!”

♦  What is it? Weekly organic waste collection that returns compost every month.

♦  Where? San Miguel De Allende (limited to three kms from Centro and Los Frailes)

    ♦  Cost? $ 500 pesos for registration and $ 360 monthly ($ 90 for each collection).

♦  How much? The amount collected is recorded and returned as compost.

Daniela Del Villar has lived in San Miguel since age three. Deeply passionate about the environment, she has participated in social and environmental movements and spent the last four years studying and understanding the waste system in the area to build programs that benefit all species.

Rotary is where neighbors, friends and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders and take action to create lasting change.
