Winston Churchill is credited with saying “we’re all dying – it’s a condition of living.” Nevertheless, few people, if any find thinking about their own demise comforting.

Let’s face it, it’s not a subject we really want to talk about.  But we all know that our days on terra firma are numbered and that it behooves us to plan for our passing. For expats living in San Miguel de Allende, there is a way to plan ahead for that eventuality and to have help and support in dealing ahead of time with the particulars of Mexican law pertaining to funerals and burial.

The 24-Hour Association, founded in 1965, provides pre-arrangement services to the expat community. It is a non-profit legally registered Mexican Associacion Civil providing a prepaid plan of cremation and burial services that fully comply with Mexican law. Since it’s humble beginnings in 1965 when Admiral Alex Charlton, U.S.N. (ret) sent out a short memo to members of the foreign community, the Association has grown to around 500 members. The Association in 1999 decided it was in its best interests to be in full compliance with Mexican law and to that end was duly registered as a nonprofit Associacion Civil.

At the helm of the 24-hour Association is Gina Giampaoli.  Gina has had the honor of being the executive secretary for the 24-Hour Association of San Miguel de Allende since August 2019. She is originally from San Miguel where she and her brother Joe were raised bilingual and bicultural.  After residency in Maryland, for 20 years, Gina returned to her hometown in 2015.

Gina is a foreign language teacher and has been teaching Spanish and English as second languages since high school. She also taught Intercultural Communication and Spanish through Theater while teaching at Frostburg State University in Maryland. She’s a freelance interpreter and translator and teaches Spanish on-line.

Rotary is where neighbors, friends and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders and take action to create lasting change. For more information contact President Skip Essick at skipessickmedia@gmail.com
