In San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, a woman is leading a composting project to avoid carbon dioxide and improve the environment.

What is known about the composting project led by a woman in Guanajuato?
Daniela del Villar, leader of the Composta San Miguel de Allende project, seeks to prevent carbon dioxide, methane gas, and nitrous oxide generated by organic waste from affecting the local environment.

In his van called “compostamovil” he delivers these containers to people to place the waste and once a week he goes to their homes and exchanges them for domestic compost that is used to plant everything from flowers to home vegetables.

The composting process is divided into two steps, creating thermophilic composting, which is when bacteria eat sugars and generate heat to eliminate plant diseases, and mesophilic composting, a process based on fungi and natural purification of the waste.

“When the waste arrives it comes with vegetables and oranges, this process is already two months old. When the process is finished after four or five months you are left with a marvel. Wonderful soil, a fertilizer full of available nutrients, and well… It can save the world.”

The company receives garbage in San Miguel de Allende
Composta San Miguel de Allende also receives garbage at its facilities, is the case of Juana Martinez, who since last October exchanges its waste for compost. Registration can be made on the website compostasma.com at a cost of 500 pesos, and collections are 90 pesos per collection.

“I was very shocked to learn that in reality garbage is a concept that we invented, that it does not exist, and that 95% is recyclable or compostable. So, from there I have always practiced composting, I have been in several countries and in several cultural projects and wherever I go I try to make sure that if there isn’t a composting site, then I found one.”

Due to the success of the program in San Miguel, this organization will expand to the municipalities of León and Guanajuato later this year.
