Guanajuato is among the Mexican states with the highest wine production, fourth on the list, below Baja California, Coahuila, and Querétaro, according to the state’s Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR). It also has a wine route and is promoting the creation of a wine cluster.

Wine has been produced in Guanajuato for more than 400 years and, recently, the state’s municipalities have resumed their wine-making vocation, gradually consolidating vineyards and wine-producing houses in the region.

The state currently has 34 vineyards registered with the Grape and Wine Association and nine vineyards not included in the association, which together have 385 hectares harvested and plans to expand to 120 hectares in the short term. The Guanajuato wine route includes vineyards in San Miguel de Allende, Dolores Hidalgo, San Francisco del Rincón and San Felipe.

This has generated in this industry the impulse to various areas of the state that year after year becomes more popular in their traditional grape harvests, generating specialized tourism in this hobby and an important economic spill, in the season from August to October.

The diversity of agricultural crops in Guanajuato, as well as the state’s own conditions such as climate, soil, water, communication routes, and proximity to centers of consumption, allow the development of the wine industry, a factor that implicitly recognizes the agro-industry as an engine of the economy.

In the state of Guanajuato, wine tourism is dedicated to promoting and managing the wine wealth of the area through a wine tasting, visits to wineries and vineyards, from lodging, food, and activities to the identity of magical towns, heritage cities, history, cultural values, handicrafts, and traditional gastronomy.

The Ministry of Tourism promotes wine tourism as a tourism product of excellence through events of international stature such as VINUM Guanajuato, Wine Tourism Conservatory, which is celebrating its 3rd edition at the San Miguel Vineyard, located in the municipality of Comonfort.

This edition, which complies with all sanitary measures issued by the Ministry of Health, convened 100 people, including chefs, sommeliers, hoteliers, restaurateurs, mezcaleros, and cooks, from 35 wineries in Guanajuato, with the aim of providing innovative tools, design, and technology to generate impact on vineyards, regions, suppliers and the entire tourism value chain.
