Very close to the downtown area of San Miguel de Allende is the community of La Huerta where an ahuehuete or better known as El Sabino, with more than 450 years of life, is hidden.

About 20 minutes from San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, there is a majestic ahuehuete: El Sabino. It is a leafy tree that is visited by tourists or people who know the place to admire its size and enjoy the tranquility of the place.

This tree is between 450 and 500 years old and is considered the second with the thickest trunk in Mexico, only behind the Tule in Oaxaca, the crown produces a shade that covers about 40 meters.

The Sabino has reached its great height and dimension thanks to the spring that nourishes it under its roots, which reached a circumference of approximately 20 meters, and to embrace it requires that between 18 and 20 people extend their arms.

To get to this beautiful place you must take the highway that goes from San Miguel to Celaya; in the deviation to Guanajuato, you must turn towards the curtain of the Allende Dam, being there in the curtain you must make a “U” turn to then take the Old Railroad road that passes through the Huerta tunnel. This tunnel, a century old, is seven meters high, five meters wide, and 400 meters long.

After leaving the tunnel, continue along the road that runs alongside the Laja River until you reach the basin where the community of La Huerta is located.

It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes because when you reach the community you have to walk about half a kilometer uphill on a cobblestone road until you reach the spring that feeds El Sabino.

In addition to visiting the tree and spending a moment of tranquility in the place, you can ask for the people who are dedicated to creating baskets with reeds and buying some pieces.
