In 2007, the traditional Sanmiguelada (also known as the “Pamplonada”), was suspended.

This event used to take place on the third Saturday of September, and bulls were released in the main streets of San Miguel.

After 34 years of celebrating the Sanmiguelada, it was canceled by the City Council in turn, arguing that it was impossible to control the event, in 2006 some 50,000 young people from all over the country had come to the event.

On the other hand, it must be remembered that the municipal administration at that time was negotiating with UNESCO for the appointment of Cultural Heritage of Humanity for the City and the Sanctuary of Atotonilco.

Fifteen years after the Sanmiguelada was suspended, tourism grew with new products and economically this event ceased to be relevant for the tourism industry in San Miguel.

However, many people keep good memories of that third weekend of September, when the bulls ran through the streets as in the “Fiestas de San Fermín” in Pamplona, Spain.
