Get ready to laugh! The topic is sex in the sixties and the treatment is skillful, tasteful, captivating and funny.

San Miguel Playreaders presents two short plays from Robert Anderson’s collection called “You Know I Can’t Hear You When the Water’s Running” which  was heralded by the New York Daily News as “one of the most successful comedies in Broadway’s history”.  It opened March 13, 1967 at the Ambassador Theatre and had a successful run of 756 performances before closing in 1969.

We’ll begin with  I’M HERBERT, directed by Marthe Fraser.  It’s about two old, old people sitting on a porch in a pair of rocking chairs and talking. Just talking—with absolute no clue of how funny they are.  But Henry Vermillion and Lois Read will show you, of course.  Each has had one or more previous marriages and perhaps a few flings, but they are hazy as to details. In fact, they don’t always know which one the other one is.

We’ll finish with   “THE SHOCK OF RECOGNITION” directed by Lois Read.  There is a difference of opinion between an earnest playwright (Frank Simons) and his producer (R.D. Hunting) who hates the opening scene where the husband appears naked to yell at his wife.  The producer wants to cut the scene, the author insists the scene is crucial—after all, it only lasts a second.  An eager, job-hunting actor (Mick Diener) becomes involved and begins to demonstrate just how he would handle the role. Also involved is the producer’s secretary (Marthe Fraser).

For San Miguel newcomers, San Miguel Playreaders is the oldest surviving theater group in San Miguel.  It began over 40 years ago in the living rooms of various expats, and evolved into staged bi-monthly public readings in the parish hall of Saint Paul’s Church.  Over the years, Playreaders developed a faithful following who often filled or overflowed the hall.  With minimal rehearsals (only three!), the barest of sets and props, Playreaders offers great theater for a minimal price.  For a couple of years, circumstances and Covid interrupted our offerings but we’re back now, this time with once a month shows in the beautiful Santa Ana Theater.

Come join the return of the San Miguel Playreaders with talented actors and directors, a favorite comedy from the sixties and the promise of lots of  fun.
