San Miguel Dressage competitors use skills that evolved in the 18th and 19th centuries at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna and the French School of Horsemanship where today’s popular dressage techniques and movements were formalized, emphasizing the development of a horse’s natural abilities through systematic training and gymnastic exercises. Today in Mexico this sport continues to grow in popularity.

Riders who will ride in March and May Dressage competitions locally, train multiple times per week, focusing on developing the horse’s and their own skills in various dressage movements and exercises so that one can observe a beautiful and expressive partnership like watching a ballet between the horse and rider. Both the horse and rider must be in top physical condition to perform at their best in competition. Conditioning exercises, including flatwork, hill work, and cardiovascular training for the rider, help improve stamina, strength, and flexibility.

Competitors must be proficient in executing a wide range of dressage movements with their horse, including circles, transitions, lateral work changes of direction, half-pass, extended and collected gaits, and more. They memorize a specific test pattern for their level of competition. Because dressage is a discipline of precision, riders must pay attention to their position, aids, and execution of movements to achieve a high level of accuracy and harmony with the horse. This often means participating in mock competitions or practice rides at home or in a simulated competition environment which can help riders and horses become accustomed to the atmosphere and pressure of competition.

Lastly, good grooming and presentation are important aspects of a dressage competition. Horses are well-groomed and riders wear appropriate dressage attire, including a jacket, breeches, boots, and a helmet. In addition the horses need all of the necessary equipment and supplies for the competition, including grooming tools, tack, water, food and snacks.
