Creating Beauty and Helping to Save the Planet

    By Ezshwan Winding

Cynthia Hamilton is an artist and was a successful art dealer in San Francisco for 18 years.

She has retired from selling Picasso, Chagall’s and the work of the Surrealists to live in San Miguel.  After living here for over 6 years, she has been inspired to start a new business, Purseibilities. This new enterprise is the product of all her years of working in art, design and her love of textiles and fashion.

She said,  “I have always loved textiles. It started 30 years ago when I was studying and working in Italy, Chicago and NYC with wonderful teachers and schools. I learned to use natural dyes, weave and create with fabric. I became an apprentice with the well-known textile artist, Anne Wilson. As a teenager in Spain, my mother gave me an old, treadle sewing machine and I began creating original and one of a kind lingerie; gathering fabrics and laces from local markets both in Italy and Spain. I learned the process of fabric from the loom to the runway, I was hooked.”

Almost every consumer product has an impact on the environment, however less known may be that the textile industry is one of the world’s worst offenders in terms of pollution.

Her eyes have been opened to the waste and pollution of the clothing industry including the sweatshops, and the toxic chemicals used in the manufacturing of massive amounts of clothes shipped to stores world wide.”

Tons of fabrics/clothes are sent to Mexico from the US every week.

Cynthia searches through piles of clothes at the Tuesday markets, she became inspired to salvage the good, natural fabrics, and create beauty from discards. She is using the help of Mexican women whose lives have become interwoven with hers. Of course it is challenging and time consuming for her to find the perfect garments to cut up to make beautiful, one of a kind purses using only recycled fabric, however these are purses with a purpose

This project, ”Purseibilities” was created from her desire to do my part; help local women work from home; stay close to their children, and explore and expand their natural creativity. They are learning a trade while using 100% recycled, hi end materials. They work together with Cynthia to create beautiful, thoughtful, custom vegan purses; most are designed and tailored to and by the individual. The signature is the custom straps which are made from the beautiful silk ties of Hermes, Chanel, Gucci and Missioni.

The attention that goes into each purse is similar to a Chanel jacket but without the price tag.

Gather your friends and come design your one of a kind purse at our upcoming Purse Party on Dec 10th.

Choose from a showroom stocked with gorgeous fabrics and trims. Enjoy this creative process with a glass of wine or a margarita with the company of good friends. We will fabricate your purse within 10 days here in San Miguel de Allende.
