ARTES Open Studio is delighted to announce an exhibition of Student Works of Art titled, “Creating Together” opening Friday, November 23, 4–7pm.

Works of art by twenty-seven different students reflect a dazzling array of disciplines and techniques that includes sculpture and painting in acrylic and oil, pastel, assemblage, drawing, collage and mixed media. There are many different styles represented with fine examples of classical realism, traditional Mexican techniques, contemporary as well as abstract work.

A special section of the show is devoted to a lively assortment of puppets, paintings and projects from EMPEZARTE (ARTSTART) students– a non-profit children’s arts therapy program developed in conjunction with FAI, the Fundación para el Apoyo Infantil as part of the ARTES Open Studio mission. EMPEZARTE offers financial aid in arts therapy for children and adolescents, with or without special needs, between the ages of 9 and 14. Emphasis is placed upon environmental awareness and projects are designed to enhance appreciation for conservation of the earth.

Over the years, students from around the globe including Mexico, the US, Canada, Europe, Latin America and Asia have participated in ARTES’ unique multicultural and multigenerational open studio approach to learning and making art. Studio time and instruction at ARTES is flexible and available to anyone with a desire to create and learn a variety of artistic styles and techniques.

ARTES welcomes students at all levels of experience and interest. From beginners to professional artists, most appreciate and benefit from the lively and supportive studio atmosphere as well as the ability to set their own schedule and studio time in a truly bilingual environment.

ARTES director, Oscar Aguirre, is a classically trained artist and has been a San Miguel resident for over 25 years. He has exhibited and taught extensively in Mexico, Canada, the US and Europe. Whether you’re interested in perfecting your technique, or a beginner looking for one-on-one instruction you’ll find the support you need at ARTES. Each student is free to create and explore individual projects with as much or as little instruction as needed and progress at their own rate.

The “Creating Together” exhibit runs through the end of December and you can during studio hours Tuesday through Friday 11am-7pm. Please check our website for further information about ARTES, EMPEZARTE and our dynamic and supportive open studio environment where your creative dreams become reality.

ARTES was created by classically trained artist and master teacher, Oscar Aguirre and designed to foster an environment of creative discovery in traditional arts education through the open studio method. Director, Oscar Aguirre has lived, worked and taught students of all ages in San Miguel de Allende for nearly 25 years. A classically trained artist with a degree in museology, he has exhibited widely in museums throughout Mexico, the United States and Europe and through prestigious venues such as ARCO, España and Art Basel, Miami, Florida. He taught modeling and sculpture at the Bellas Artes, San Miguel for 10 years and served as Co-Director of Kunst Haus Gallery, Santa Fe. SMA. He has conducted innumerable workshops and arts-education events for years for children of all ages throughout San Miguel and other cities. Much of Aguirre’s work is informed through his keen environmental awareness and passion for environmental conservation reflected in his frequent use of recycled materials. In one especially memorable project– an installation requiring 1000 bottles– he set about with a group of children to collect the bottles and in doing so, cleaned several abandoned lots that had been garbage-strewn for years. (See full CV attached). Most arts education programs are limited to group instruction, but in the ARTES open studio environment, individual instruction and mentoring of students– at all ages and skill levels– is provided in a multicultural, intergenerational and bi-lingual environment. At the beginning of their course of study, each student is assessed to determine experience and skill level, then a particular medium is chosen– whether painting, drawing, modeling or interdisciplinary– and the design for a project and its completion is underway. The multi-cultural, bi-lingual and intergenerational environment at ARTES allows for lively, cross-cultural exchanges, discoveries and a nurturing interaction that we believe is unique to the ARTES open studio experience. There are currently 25 students studying at ARTES, with 15 adults and 10 children between the ages of  7 and 14.
