Leonard and Reva Brooks moved from Canada to San Miguel de Allende in 1947. The young couple’s plans to spend a year studying art in México turned into a more than 50-year stay and enduring infatuation with San Miguel. As their respective art careers flourished, the Brooks—along with a small group of artist friends—were instrumental in shaping San Miguel de Allende into the internationally-recognized art community it is today.
When Leonard & Reva Brooks arrived, San Miguel was a sleepy little town where magic was about to happen. They played a major part in shaping its destiny as they inspired other painters and musicians to come to San Miguel. The Brooks’ acclaimed careers took them around the world, but it was in San Miguel that they thrived as artists: Reva as a photographer, and Leonard as a painter (whose vast body of work ranges from representational watercolors and oils to abstract collages). The people of San Miguel and scenes of local daily life figure prominently in both their work.
