    Angela Peralta Theater

    500 pesos orchestra
    400 pesos general

By Salomón Maawad, Translated by Kathleen Ogrady

This magnificent tribute is very special for The Downbeats because it reunites some of the greatest innovators in the history of the musical genre of jazz. Since they have been the biggest references that have influenced thousands of musicians and various generations throughout the world, the concert will be characterized by playing key compositions by the great masters, and also some original compositions by Salomón Maawad dedicated especially to them. This program is composed of different styles like bebop, swing, ballad, cool jazz, fusion jazz, bossa nova, latin jazz, and lots of improvisation.

The members of this quartet are:

Bobby Kap, on drums, is an authentic jazz musician with a huge musical trajectory of more than 60 years presenting on different stages in Mexico and abroad. Starting in 1981, he was part of The Downbeats for various years, doing tours in the Caribbean and other parts of Mexico.

Patricio Peña, pianist, is a musician with a classical education and is a wonderful talent in jazz. He presently forms part of The Downbeats, is very versatile in many musical genres, and has performed on different stages abroad and in Mexico.

David Barrera, on the bass, is a graduate of the Jazz School of Xalapa, Veracruz. He is also a very versatile musician with a large trajectory and presently forms part of The Downbeats. His participation in the group gives a solid and constant groove to the rhythm and harmonic section.

Salomón Maawad is director of the group, composer, and musical arranger; and plays the tenor, alto, and soprano saxophones. All of his new compositions have been inspired by the jazz greats. His musical trajectory is very broad. He has participated in international festivals such as the Cervantino, International Festival of Mexico City, and abroad in South America. He also is one of the original creators of the International Jazz Festival of San Miguel de Allende, 1993—2002, and was its musical director along with festival director Elena Shoemaker. Presently, he is the creator and director of the Encuentro Nacional de Jazz de San Miguel with 20 editions and counting.

The concert will be held on Saturday, April 30, at 6pm. We also are presenting a special exhibition of jazz photographs by Alejandro Contreras Camacho titled “Jazzyando” from 12pm to 6pm. There will ba a welcome cocktail at 4pm. Tickets are on sale now at the Angela Peralta Theater ticket office, 500 pesos orchestra and 400 pesos general admission. We hope you can join us on this magical night of celebration and hope you enjoy the concert.
