In a Flash! Fiction and Nonfiction

    By Maia Williams

The inaugural Prose Café Bellas Artes will be held in Sala Literaria on Monday, March 4th. Prose Café is a curated series of readings featuring three writers of fiction and nonfiction presenting fifteen minutes of their work in a casual setting.

Rosaleen Bertolino has spent pretty much her entire life just north of San Francisco. A year and a half ago, she and her husband retired to San Miguel. Her publications include stories in the New England Review, Storyscape, Superstition Review, Gravel, the Capra Review, and, most recently, the anthology Mexico Hoy! She has an MA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University. Her awards include a Marin Arts Council Individual Artist Grant and honorable mention for the James D. Phelan Award.

After Jeannette Harvey sold her advertising agency in Whitehorse, Yukon, she traded copywriting for writing short stories. She previously worked as feature writer and editor for The Weekender, a Yukon News publication. She splits her time between Atlin, British Columbia and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Currently, she is working on a novel set in Mexico. Her short story, “Thoughtful Murders,” has been nominated for The Journey Prize for short fiction in Canada.

    William Dunlap

William Dunlap is a painter and writer who occasionally comments in print and on public television about Art, its causes, effects, and consequences.

Bill has a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Mississippi and coached art (he claims you can’t really teach it) at the University of North Carolina’s Appalachian State University from 1970 to 1979.

Currently, he is a working, exhibiting artist afoot in the land and is, to date, getting away with it. His work is in the collections of, amongst others, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Gallery of Art, The Mississippi Museum of Art, The Morris Museum, The Ogden Museum of Southern Art, and The Gibbes Museum.

His books include Homecomings, a collaboration with Willie Morris; DUNLAP, a monograph of his work, both published by the University Press of Mississippi; and more recently, SHORT MEAN FICTION: Words and Pictures, published by Nautilus Press. Bill is currently wrapping up work on his second volume of short stories titled, LYING AND MAKING A LIVING: Fiction with Footnotes.

The next Prose Café Bellas Artes will be held on Wednesday, April 24th.

Our purpose is to offer visibility, community, and inspiration to the writers and readers of San Miguel de Allende; to honor the long history of distinguished writers living and working here; to enrich the cultural life and educational opportunities for local residents in both Spanish and English; and to establish San Miguel de Allende as a leading destination for literary and cultural tourism commensurate with its status as a World Heritage Site. We believe that reading and writing are essential, that great literature enriches our lives, feeds our souls, and facilitates greater understanding of ourselves and others.
