Philosopher Joy James will revisit her earlier book Resisting State Violence and examine the January 6, 2021 incursion into the US Capitol and a destabilized democracy amid rising (proto) fascism.
A self-described “rebel offspring of a southern military family,” James critiques authoritarianism, capitalism, white supremacy, and misogyny. A prolific and creative philosopher, Joy James is Professor of the Humanities at Williams College. She has worked with activist organizations for decades. She is the author of “The Womb of Western Theory” and a forthcoming book on “The Captive Maternal.” James is editor of Imprisoned Intellectuals; The New Abolitionists; Warfare in the American Homeland; The Angela Y. Davis Reader; and co-editor of The Black Feminist Reader. Her books include: Resisting State Violence; Transcending the Talented Tenth; Shadowboxing: Representations of Black Feminist Politics; and Seeking the ‘Beloved Community.’
What we do The Center engages in local community support and outreach to promote and advance initiatives and movements toward social justice, grassroots empowerment and democracy, and environmental sustainability. It is also devoted to critical analysis of the processes and impacts of globalization, both local and international. The Center works to develop alternative socio-economic systems that conserve and share the world’s cultural, economic, and environmental resources for the benefit of humankind.
