During the Napoleonic Wars the frigate HMS Surprise, a 28-gun fifth class, is ordered to follow the much larger, more recently built 44-gun French warship Acheron to the shores of Brazil. Unexpectedly, the French ship attacks the Surprise, causing considerable damage and some casualties. Despite the fact that his orders do not contemplate it, the English captain Aubrey undertakes the pursuit of the “Acheron” bordering Cape Horn and sailing to the Galapagos Islands. There the two ships will face each other again, and Aubrey and his men will achieve victory by using a trap camouflaging the HMS Surprise as an English whaling ship, to attack the French ship by surprise (a technique taken from the mimicry observed by Aubrey, in the Galapagos Islands, in the insect specimens collected by Dr. Stephen Maturín, a doctor on his ship, fond of botany and taxonomy.

Capitán de Mar y Guerra: La costa más lejana del mundo
Durante las guerras napoleónicas la fragata HMS Surprise, una quinta clase de 28 cañones, tiene órdenes de seguir al buque de guerra francés Acheron, mucho mayor, de 44 cañones y construido más recientemente, hasta las costas de Brasil. De forma imprevista el navío francés ataca al Surprise, al que causa considerables destrozos y algunas bajas. A pesar de que sus órdenes no lo contemplan, el capitán inglés Aubrey, emprende la persecución del “Acheron” bordeando el Cabo de Hornos y navegando hasta las Islas Galápagos. Allí los dos buques se enfrentarán de nuevo, y Aubrey y sus hombres lograrán la victoria usando una trampa camuflando el HMS Surprise como buque ballenero inglés, para atacar por sorpresa al navío francés (técnica tomada del mimetismo observado por Aubrey, en las islas Galápagos, en los ejemplares de insectos coleccionados por el Dr. Stephen Maturín, médico de su embarcación, aficionado a la botánica y la taxonomía.
