“Peaceplay”— A Pop Up Art Show by John Hillmer at Bordello Galeria

John Hillmer returns to the Bordello Galeria for another “pop up” on Organos in Centro. The show opens in the gallery’s lovely courtyard for a couple weekend days blessed with original paintings, fine art prints, and a little tequila. Hillmer returns exploring familiar themes of music, Mexico, and meditation.
A mix of the deeply reverent and the cheekily irreverent meet in Hillmer‘s work, which has made appearances—in the form of large stage murals—with Ray Charles, Keb’ Mo’ and Maya Angelou. That energy is alive and well here.
Peace and play are also essential elements.
Mahatma Gandhi stated beautifully, “there is no path to peace. Peace is the path.” Albert Einstein—a rather smart fellow himself—wrote that “peace cannot be kept by force, it can only be achieved by understanding.” Mark Twain—lover of language, wisdom, humor, and tobacco—was perhaps not so convinced that mankind could find enduring peace, but nonetheless insisted that we “do the right thing. It will gratify some people and astonish the rest.”
Meanwhile, jazz and blues, buddhas, the natural world, and symbols of soul all interconnect in these paintings and prints. They seem to ask if play is requisite in any realization of peace? Or is it stillness? They wonder if the playful energy of children, musicians, birds, and even mermaids is somehow necessary to live in harmony? They ponder if art itself is a kind of therapy? And they question why there is no Peace Department?
Can art ask such questions? Why not?
