  • Christo versus Warhol: Brilliant Art and Eccentric Personalities

    MXN $300

    Instructors: Kimberly and Carl Weichel
    February 21 Tuesday 1-3 p.m. 300 pesos ZOOM ONLY

We venture to say that most of you have at least heard of Christo and his wife Jeanne-Claude and Andy Warhol – iconic artists who started their amazing but controversial careers in the 1960s.  Iconic images of Soup Cans and Marilyn Monroe seem to define Warhol’s art but what if there was more – mind-bending visual arts,   gender bending depictions.  For many the question was and perhaps remains, is that art? And Christo and his wife Jeanne-Claude – how in the world is wrapping L’Arc de Triomphe in silver-blue fabric and red rope or installing 7,503 vinyl “gates” along 23 miles of pathways in NY’s Central Park considered art?

How do we define art in respect to these 3 artists?  What creative processes, impulses, in each of the artists had them envision their creative ideas as reality?  And how did they become icons of modern art?  Because even if you do not know their names or other artistic works you recognize Warhol’s portraits of Marilyn Monroe and photos of L’Arc de Triomphe  wrapped.

If you are curious about what constitutes art and especially popular art, Carl and Kimberly Weichel will help us understand the eminent place these artists have in the world of art, the world of popular art and their influence on other artists.  You can find out at the course Christo vs Warhol on Tuesday, February 21, 1-3pm, on Zoom.  Cost is 300 pesos.  Register online at or at the Instituto Allende between 9 and 2.

Carl Weichel has held various positions over his career in marketing, design, and advertising in Australia, South Africa, Canada, and in the U.S. As an avid reader, he has led adult education courses at OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) at American University and Dominican University on Political Polarization, the 1960s, Our Hidden Brain, Eastern Religions, David Brooks’ writings and the NY Times Book Review.

Kimberly Weichel is a social entrepreneur and nonprofit leader in the fields of women’s leadership, cross-cultural dialogue, citizen diplomacy, and peacebuilding, and is a published author, mentor and speaker. She has co-led OLLI courses at American University and Dominican University on the United Nations, the 1960s Decade, and Our Hidden Brain.
