  • THE INVENTION OF THE PIANO
    PETER SUMNER

    ONE-DAY COURSE: MONDAY, FEBRUARY 11.

    CLASS 10:00 – 12:00, SERVED LUNCH 12:00 – 1:00, CLASS 1:00 – 3:00.

    475 PESOS (INCLUDING LUNCH)

Bartolomeo Cristofori (1655-1731), a harpsichord maker in Florence, Italy, invented the piano sometime around 1715.  How did he do this?  Why did he do it?  What was the historical context that permitted and encouraged this development?  Why is his invention considered even today a miraculous and singular achievement?  This one-day course will include a screening of “Note by Note,” the compelling documentary about building a Steinway piano from start to finish.  There will be ample time for Q & A.Peter Sumner recently retired as Piano Curator for the Department of Music at Stanford University.  He spent five summers in Aspen as the head piano technician at the Aspen Music Festival, supervising ten piano technicians.  He prepared new Steinway pianos for sale at a California dealership.  Most recently, he was head piano technician for the Brevard Music Festival in North Carolina, and continues as the piano technician for Pro Musica’s nine-foot Steinway concert grand piano in San Miguel.  He is also an independent consultant to piano manufacturers, institutions, and private clients.

The Lifelong Learning Program at the Centro Cultural / Instituto Allende provides San Miguel de Allende residents and visitors with the opportunity of taking courses designed for self-enrichment, intellectual stimulation, and fun. Courses are designed for adult learners by skilled instructors. All program staff and instructors are volunteers in order to keep tuition as low as possible. We offer approximately two dozen courses from October through March. There are two to seven two-hour classes per course. For schedules and fees, which include social hour snacks after each class, or lunch in one-day courses, please see course descriptions below. The program is an excellent way to meet interesting new people and to indulge your intellectual curiosity. Now you can finally take those intriguing courses you never had time to take in school, but with no homework, exams, or grades!
