  • The History of Dining is a fascinating look into an entire facet of history that we rarely consider.  It is presented by Eva Eliscu on March 4,8,10 at the Instituto Allende, cost is 600 pesos.

Oh, how we love to eat!   And how many memorable conversations have we had at the dinner table?  And when we eat out at fine dining restaurant, how we enjoy the crisp white napkins folded just so, the silverware arranged just so, and the water and wine glasses sparkling in the light, be it candlelight or low lighting from sparkling light fixtures, and the tablecloth speaking of elegance.

There is a whole history behind what you see today on the dining table and what you see on Downton Abbey in the dining room!  And of course, we have seen many dining scenes in the movies portraying Romans dining while reclining in couches and eating with fingers, Medieval dining with bread trenchers and a knife to skewer meat to eat,  dining with King Henry VIII or Napoleon or Queen Victoria or one of their subjects,  to our more simplified dining habits.  And the food!  What did the Romans eat?  The Kings and Queens of history?  How did dining change?  And what happened around famous dining tables – with Napoleon, Churchill, Antony, and Cleopatra?  What wars were started or averted?  What secret alliances?  And who were the trendsetters responsible for changing the food they ate, and what we perhaps don’t eat?  Who changed dining room décor?  When did tablecloths become a symbol of gentility and manners?
The history of dining is a fascinating one. And perhaps one we never think of.  But we can learn a great deal about the culture and history of the past by learning about what people ate, how they set their tables and, of course, what they drank!  Champagne, anyone?
