  • Flamenco show based on the female characters of the poems and works of Federico Garcia Lorca, with live dance, music and singing

Espectáculo flamenco basado en los personajes femeninos de los poemas y obras de Federico Garcia Lorca, con danza, música y cante en vivo

    By Peter Ramsey

The poet, Federico Lorca knew the complexity of a woman’s soul. Through his poems and plays he created characters of deep nuance that have impacted the collective consciousness. These are but a few examples: Yerma the sterile woman, Bernarda Alba the ruthless matriarch, Mariana Pineda the heroine of freedom, Doña Rosita la Soltera the woman always waiting for love, the passionate and rebellious bride in Bodas de Sangre and also the women of Romancero Gitano reminiscent of Soledad Montoya and her strict and lonely soul like the stoic environment she inhabited and the Gypsy Preciosa always running from the wind.

Principle dancer Alfredo Enriquez will interpret the life and death struggle of Lorca, a sensitive poet trying to thrive in the toxic environment of fascism under Franco’s Spain in the 1930’s.

Angela La Yerbabuena will represent Mariana Pineda and Soledad Montoya. Fernanda Garrido will perform the character Doña Rosita la Soltera.

Two women of the company “La Cueva del Duende” Arlene Nájera and Ana Alcala y will perform as the Manolas, the typical women of society in that time in Madrid, as well as the gypsy women of the villages of Andalusia.

Maria Garcia Esperon will be the voice of the poems, and Esther Azulito will sing incredible songs.

Federico Lorca was quoted as saying that “Flamenco was the most gigantic creation of the Spanish culture.” Garcia wants to express the sensuality and the poetry of the Lorca women and to involve the audience in the deep mystery of Flamenco. It is interesting to contemplate what Lorca would have been able to offer the world had he lived. At the time of his untimely murder in 1936 at the young age of 38 he was planning to escape Franco’s Spain and start life anew in Mexico.

The musicians performing will be, guitarist Juan Rosas, Canto Alberto Solis and percussionist Victor Monterrubio. Expect a very lush performance, great dancing, accomplished musicians and extraordinary colorful costumes.
