  • Mexico celebrates St. George’s Day with books, roses and Catalan gastronomy

Sant Jordi -or Saint George- has been the patron saint of Catalonia since 1456. Every April 23 commemorates the death anniversary of the young Roman soldier martyred in the year 303 of our era for not renouncing the Christian faith. That date also evokes two greats of universal literature: Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare, who died on April 22 and 23, 1616, respectively. Saint George is represented mounted on horseback killing a dragon that threatened the lives of the inhabitants of a kingdom, and from whose blood – legend says – roses sprouted. That’s why April 23, St. George’s Day, is Book and Rose Day.
