  • San Miguel de Allende has a serious overpopulation problem

The overpopulation of dogs and cats is a significant issue that has serious consequences for both the animals and San Miguel de Allende. The root cause of the problem is the failure of owners to spay or neuter their pets, resulting in uncontrolled breeding and a surplus of unwanted animals. This leads to overcrowding in shelters and on the streets, where the animals suffer from starvation, disease, and other forms of neglect.

The consequences of this overpopulation are severe. First and foremost, it results in the euthanasia of millions of healthy and adoptable animals each year due to lack of space in shelters and a shortage of homes. This is not only tragic for the animals themselves but also a waste of valuable resources and a drain on the emotional well-being of shelter staff and volunteers.

Furthermore, stray animals can be a significant public health concern. Unvaccinated and uncontrolled animals can spread disease to other animals, including humans. Stray animals can also pose a danger to people and other animals, particularly when they are aggressive or frightened.

The overpopulation of dogs and cats also has economic implications. San Miguel spends significant amounts of money each year dealing with the problem, including funding animal control programs, operating animal shelters, and managing the disposal of animal carcasses. Additionally, the impact on the environment is considerable, as the high numbers of animals produce waste and contribute to pollution.

In conclusion, the overpopulation of dogs and cats is a serious problem with far-reaching consequences for both animals and society. Spaying and neutering pets, responsible pet ownership, and supporting animal welfare organizations are all critical steps that can be taken to address this issue.

    Can you help us?

One local grass roots organization, Spay Neuter SMA led by Gustavo (Kiko) Rodriguez is determined to make a difference.

Spay Neuter SMA’s program takes their operations directly to underserved communities.

The program includes education as to the benefits of spaying and neutering and communication that free surgeries are conducted by a certified vet. The cost of the vet and rental of a space are all funded by donations. A successful pilot was recently conducted with 38 dogs and cats spayed or neutered in one day. It is now our goal to return to the same community in 90 days in order to “break the cycle” of reproduction. This is only possible with donations from animal-loving people with a big heart. 500 pesos, about $25USD, can spay or neuter one animal and save the female dogs and her puppies from untold suffering.

With your participation, our May 13 event will raise enough money to achieve this goal.

    When: March 13, 2023
