Peace is not something we hear about often – just the desire for peace. Well, peace is possible, and the Rotary Clubs here have been actively working on peace-building around the world for the past 8 years. Come to Rotary Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at 9:30 a.m. at the Biblioteca’s Sala Quetzal’s Relox entrance when Rudy Westervelt, president of Solutions for Peace, will share Rotary’s history of peace-building, and the Club will feature its nine peace projects over the past eight years.

Rotary was a convening partner of the United Nations in 1945. It has been demonstrating its non-politicism by supporting peace-building projects in Russia and the Ukraine.

Local Rotary Clubs are responsible for the peace pole in Juarez Park, a Peace is Profitable conference, a peace essay contest for youth, a peace march to the Parroquia, a time capsule with 500 children’s wishes for peace, planting the first peace tree in Mexico, and ore

Peace is much more than the absence of violence. Rotarians pursue projects to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.

Personal friendships and family bonds allow even the most entrenched hatreds and distrusts to diffuse under the Rotary umbrella of friendship.

Wednesday, September 21 is the International Day of Peace, and all are invited to the Pace Pole in Juarez Park to participate in a world-wide moment of silence for peace.
