  • Anyone Can Be A Caregiver

    Tuesday, October 1st , 2019 9:30AM

    Los Arcos
    Stirling Dickenson 27

    Cost: Free

When my wife and I decided to retire to San Miguel de Allende two years ago we knew that with aging parents back in the states, it was likely that our plans would, at some point, have to be put on hold.  Taking on the role of being a caregiver wasn’t a part of the retirement playbook.  But, nevertheless, it was and is a responsibility that we knew we had to accept.  Many of you have been or are in a similar situation.   Author and part-time SMA resident Janet Dunnett has been there.  Both of her parents were getting old and supporting them more each year had become a new concern.

In her book, The Dwindling: A Daughter’s Caregiving Journey to the Edge of Life, Ms. Dunnett presents a unique narrative of caring for her parents as they faced complex conditions that piled up and added a new degree of  frailty with every passing month.  On Tuesday, October 1st, she will speak at the Midday Rotary Club of San Miguel.  Her presentation will go beyond my book. Specifically, detailing ten ways that anyone can help a caregiver. Rosalyn Carter has said that there are only four kinds of people in the world. Those who are caregiving now. Those who have been caregivers. Those who will be caregivers, and those who will need care.

Janet Dunnett spent 30 years working for the Canadian International Development Agency (now part of Global Affairs Canada) and lived in Asia and Africa with her home base in Ottawa, Canada. She retired to Vancouver Island, British Columbia where she currently lives with her husband of 44 years. When in SMA, she resides in in Colonia San Antonio. Since the publication of her memoir in 2017 she has become an advocate for caregivers and issues of late life care.

Anyone can be a caregiver.  Join the Midday Club of San Miguel de Allende with our guest Janet Dunnett for this informative presentation, Tuesday, October 1st.  Doors open at 9AM, the meeting begins at 9:30AM with the speaker scheduled between 10 and 10:30AM.  We’re located at Los Arcos at #27 Sterling Dickenson
