Ana Thiel is one of few artists in Mexico to have her own glass melting furnace. Imagine a great vat that contains over 200 kg of molten glass at 1250°C. Glassblowers are relatively famous. Yet artists that work with cast glass are mostly unknown. They are rare. Bertil Vallien, Swedish; Koen Vanderstukken, Belgian, have, along with Ana, the highest profile.

The most common cast glass technique involves making an impression with a form into prepared sand to create a mold. Following this, molten glass into the form. Many different things can be done at this stage: color can be added, air bubbles formed, pre-cast and reheated glass forms can be placed within two molten layers, etc.

Ana, however, does not just cast glass into sand. She also casts into wood, metal forms, books and other objects. She may change the shape of her forms as well while they are still hot by the action of twisting and rolling.

All these processes make her work quite audacious and original. They are, first of all, sculptural in essence. The building up of glass elements can form columns or complex architectural sections. Integrating the components of cast glass with rocks returns to nature, adding luminosity and color.

Ana prepares her projects for months in advance before lighting the furnace. The day the furnace is lit is always momentous. It is an event that marks the beginning of a very intense work period. Three days of heating are required to bring the furnace to its working temperature. It is maintained there (2280°F degrees) during the whole 3-4 week working period. Ana makes the most of this time by offering offering frequent learning workshops. She enjoys sharing the knowledge accumulated during almost 40 years of experience aquired in different studios and various artistic residencies around the world.
