  • Unveiling of the Mural T’zunun, Maestro Carlos Cabán

    Friday, January 24, 5:30-8:30pm
    Casa Colibri, Terraplen 4

Carlos Cabán, a resident in San Miguel for more than 22 years, has had a distinguished career as a book and courtroom illustrator, painter, teacher and muralist. His childhood dream has taken him on a journey that started with a desire of a young boy of immigrant parents in New York to become an artist. Even though he was too young to know what this entailed, he persisted to teach himself to draw and this won him scholarships for art classes and eventually to Pratt Institute, where he graduated with a BFA majoring in illustration.

His art has appeared in numerous publications, books , magazines and album covers and he has had many gallery exhibitions of his art in Puerto Rico, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and New York.

Wanting to do more with his art than work at an art agency, Cabán chose to join the Peace Corps instead and helped establish an art school for native Wayuú children in the desert peninsula of La Guajira in Colombia SA.

SiThis experience of sharing life with South American native people changed his life, spirituality, and his art forever, and this brought him to Mexico to live and paint his experiences with the Huichol peoples who still use peyote in their ceremonies.nce then, his paintings, drawings and illustrations have focused on indigenous themes and spiritually and what can be called his own “Visionary Art”.
Cabán has taught painting, drawing and pastel drawing in the Instituto Allende for many years. He still resides in San Miguel where he is now painting murals and still teaching.
