La Posadita boasts one of the best restaurant locations in San Miguel. The views from its charming roof terrace, with the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel on one side and the surrounding hills and mountains just visible from the other, are a major part of its draw. Homely service accompanies the generous portions of Mexican fare which includes fajitas, stuffed chilies, and cochinita pibil – Yucatan-style shredded pork marinated with orange juice. Pozole, a homely broth beloved across Mexico and a cornerstone of the country’s food culture, is regularly available at weekends and well worth trying. Margaritas from the bar, including a tamarind-flavored twist on the classic recipe, are expertly made and uniformly well received, making La Posadita the perfect spot to unwind after a day’s sight-seeing.
Though La Posadita offers up-close views of La Parrochia, whose Gothic spires loom overhead, the popular dining spot also overlooks the rooftops, hills, and valleys below. Food-wise, you can get farm-to-table fare in the form of chilles rellenos and sopa de pollo, topped with chopped onions, cilantro, avocado, and crescents of lime. The frozen tamarind margarita is a tangy-sweet ode to tequila.

La Posadita is a family restaurant with traditional Mexican food. It opened its doors 16 years ago with the idea of creating a place for typical snacks in Centro. Here you can try a great variety of dishes from different states of Mexico with authentic regional recipes. The restaurant is so committed to bringing true Mexican cuisine that they travel to the place of origin to recreate the original, homemade recipes. This effort pays off in that each one of their dishes is truly exceptional. They have a pozole that follows a recipe from the state of Guerrero, in which the beans are shelled by hand. The cuisine is one hundred percent artisanal. Some of the featured dishes are Cochinita Pibil, lime soup, red pozole, green pozole, stuffed chiles, chamorro based on a recipe from Michoacán, arrachera, rib eye steak, and a great variety of salads. On the top floor you will find a wine cellar, with seventy percent of the wines coming from Mexico. and a spectacular view. Seventy percent of their wines are from Mexico.
Each dish features its origin and tradition, and they are based on recipes of the grandmother or aunt whose preparation of the dish everyone loved. Another interesting detail is that the tortillas are home made, and are prepared by a lady who takes the corn home and makes them from scratch. This makes for some of the tastiest tortillas in the area. This is the place where the ordinary becomes extraordinary from the moment you enter, including the music which covers may genres and comes from different regions of Mexico. The service is excellent as well and they even have the state’s best waiter. The staff is very friendly and the atmosphere is cozy. Perhaps the best part is the spectacular view overlooking the Parroquia which you can enjoy as you have some wine or cocktail and a meal.
One of our favorite restaurants in town is La Posadita. We ate there tonight. It was our first experience since the opening of Quince right next door. We were bombarded by dueling music systems. Posadita playing Mexican folk and Quince playing 80’s soft rock (?). Each sound system uncomfortably loud trying to drown out the other…..the unfortunate bi-product was noise pollution to the point where the lovely atmosphere that made Posadita so special was lost and conversation difficult. It’s too bad the two restaurants couldn’t coordinate music and let us choose by the merits of the food and ambiance.

We always take our visiting friends and family to La Posadita. It’s a casual but pretty (especially at night) rooftop restaurant downtown, across the street from the Parroquia. They serve consistently good traditional Mexican fare, and great margaritas. When asked, we usually recommend that guests eat at La Posadita on their first night in San Miguel, just to get a feel for the landscape of the city. We recommend reservations on weekends and on any night during high seasons.
La Posadita rooftop restaurant, has no celebrity Chef behind them, and with a very local traditional Mexican menu, and a lovely location overlooking Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel, capture my attention and raised to be my absolute favorite gourmet experience during my recent visit to San Miguel de Allende. Unpretentious, with friendly service and staff, eager to explain you every single dish. Such a marvelous night to seat out and enjoy their quiet and quaint atmosphere. Strongly recommend the Grilled Nopal with Ranchero Cheese and the Green Pozole with Chicken – a sort of stew/soup with meat, usually pork, chicken, turkey, pork rinds, chili peppers, and other seasonings and garnish such as cabbage, salsa and limes and/or lemons. This time I paired my choices with a marvelous Tamarindo Margarita.
