  • Those looking for serious, high-end cooking in San Miguel can’t do much better than Moxi. Run by Enrique Olvera, one of the country’s foremost chefs and owner of the Mexico City restaurant Pujol, Moxi’s kitchen specializes in innovative and artfully presented takes on Mexican classics. Dishes change with the seasons and include confit leg of suckling pig with almond mole sauce and tamarind puree, and beef carpaccio with rocket and buttermilk. Housed in the boutique Hotel Matilda, Moxi’s dining room is casual but elegant and boasts an impressive art collection.

Don’t miss this great restaurant at the boutique Hotel Matilda at Aldama 53. The small private dining room with fireplace and round table is perfect for a group. The service and food are always excellent. Their terrace is a lovely spot for dinner on warmer nights! For something more casual, there is a fun bar on the second floor featuring handmade pizzas. Their new chef Pancho Ibañez has just introduced a new menu featuring authentic Mexican flavors, organic ingredients and simple but sophisticated preparations, said Bruce James, Director of Hotel Matilda. “He is making big waves in San Miguel with his hearty and innovative take on contemporary Mexican cuisine.”

Olvera (of Pujol) took over the kitchen of Moxi in June. Moxi is the casual yet super-sexy indoor/outdoor restaurant at the Hotel Matilda, a low-key boutique hotel with an incredible art collection. Olvera pushes the limits of modern Mexican cuisine but never crosses the line into fusion or full-molecular.

Hotel Matilda has a lovely indoor/outdoor restaurant run by Chef Enrique Olvera, a graduate of New York’s Culinary Institute of America and winner of countless culinary awards. Their breakfast menu is limited, but interesting and very good. We eat there often on weekday mornings, when the hotel is less crowded. (We eat there for lunch often too – it’s probably our favorite restaurant in town.)

MOXI by Chef Enrique Olvera at innovative and great small boutique hotel, Hotel Matilda. An obligated stop for any foodie. San Miguel de Allende is a bohemian town, where art and design define the identity and heart of this destination, Hotel Matilda is a great referent that embraces this concept with a very forward thinking. MOXI – meaning craving in Otomi dialect – is the superstar of San Miguel de Allende restaurant scene. Enrique Olvera is Mexico’s globally celebrated chef who has received numerous awards and whose Mexico City restaurant, Pujol, is #17 on the San Pellegrino list of the world’s 50 best restaurants. At Moxi, he unites traditional Mexican dishes with the latest techniques and cosmopolitan concepts, creating a menu with a Mexican soul and an international palate. Chef Olvera’s Moxi has fired a reputation for Hotel Matilda as a culinary innovator and destination for gourmands and food lovers. Here I went through a 4-Steps journey paired by Maitre Cristian Aguilera, who carefully curated a selection of local artisanal beers: Cervaza Clara Allende and Baja Black. Fantastic Mexican white wines: Casa Madero Sauvignon Blanc and Monte Xanic Chenin Blanc. And of course a glass of famed Tequila Casa Dragones and Mezcales: Amores and Beneva. Indoor and outdoor seating, welcomes guest for breakfast, lunch and dinner every night. My favorite dish, was the deconstructed Sweet corn tamal with sour cream and farmer cheese. After dinner, make sure to stop by the trendy bar Mui Bar with an obligate photo moment at their bathrooms by renown artist Spencer Tunick.
