Last Friday evening, we had a lovely dinner at Merken, located at Orizaba 15. The street numbers are a little confusing because the odd numbers appear on both sides of the street. As you walk away from The Ancha, it will be on your left. There are English translations on the menu.
The restaurant has a large open courtyard with tables around the perimeter. We started with classic margaritas, which were quite good, so we each had another. Then we each had soup as a first course. I love Azteca (tortilla) soup and this was delicious, close to my favorite version from El Pegaso. My husband had the garlic soup which he said was very tasty. We thought the portion sizes were perfect for a first course. Next, I had the risotto de hongas (mushroom risotto) and it was wonderful with large pieces of mushrooms. My husband thought his Huachinango (red snapper) was among the best he’s ever had. We finished the meal off with two desserts that were not listed on the menu – a very different and good crème brûlée and a cherry pie. The pie was unlike a typical pie but it was very good.
We thought the food was delicious, creative, flavorful and the presentation was lovely The portions were perfect – we were full but not stuffed and had room for dessert, something not true for many restaurants. The entire meal cost 1345 pesos before tip and included four margaritas, two soups, two main courses and two desserts. We thought it was a very good price for what we got. I’ve attached photos of the risotto, and the desserts.
Make a note of Merken Campestre.
This outdoor spot is a reincarnation of Nicosio that used to be on Hidalgo. Remember the duck? Five of us asked him for a degustacion, and did he (and his wife Yaya) ever deliver! Organic produce grown on premises. Exquisite presentation. Iced cafe de olla. Sun dried fruits and vegetables dehydrating in a glass case at the entrance. The bill for 5 courses for the five of us was somewhat less than 1800 pesos (no alcohol); maybe not cheap but a bargain by my measure. Look them up on Facebook and/or call 415-100-4111. Open Wed-Sun, breakfast through 7pm. It’s along the road to Taboada, off the highway to Dolores.
We found “another” favorite restaurant! You may remember having a wonderful dinner at Nicasio Comedor Mexicano on Hildago. Pablo is back and his partner is Ya Ya Fuentes. Not to be missed!
