Yesterday afternoon in the heat I wanted a light, fresh meal and went for my second visit to El Puerto (on San Pedro a few doors north of Umaran). It’s a delightful, local spot with a good variety of fresh seafood dishes. It’s a pleasant, simple space with bi-lingual menu and attentive, bi-lingual service. There is some emphasis on ceviches, but there are other items, too, including a few chicken and beef menu items.
Coming in the next couple of months is an expanded kitchen and an even more complete seafood menu.
They also feature an interesting array of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. I tried the mint and tonic water, which was chilled and fresh, tho I would prefer it less sweet. Prices range from 60 – about 200 pesos.
El Puerto is a refreshing change of pace and an escape from crowded, expensive tourist-focused spots.
I enjoyed a fresh and moderately priced seafood dinner this week at El Puerto, which is located on San Pedro between Umaran and Canal. The oysters were small, but fresh and tasty; the tuna tower also fresh and flavorful, as were the scallop and the shrimp tostadas. El Puerto is a nice change from the too-fancy places, as well as from the local places that serve up only traditional Mexican fare. If you like seafood and you’re around the Jardin, take a ten minute walk downhill and give yourself a fresh treat.
Just left El Puerto. Food was excellent, everything tasted very fresh and the flavor were wonderful. We will definitely go back. I highly recommend.
El Puerto has the best seafood I have had since moving to San Miguel (menu attached). Even better than many beach restaurants we have tried.
During 30 years of visits here you could not have paid me to eat a raw oyster at any restaurant in this town. Until now. The chef’s ceviches were so wonderful that I did what I never thought I would and ordered the raw oysters. They were sensational. And this from someone who lived along Oyster Bay and just a few blocks from an oyster hatchery.
The restaurant has a simple nautical theme and the staff members were charming and attentive. Everything we had was so fresh and flavorful. I can’t emphasize the freshness of his seafood enough. We will be ordering a few dozen oysters for friends coming next week and will be lunching there again very soon. Do try it.

All the dishes we’ve tried there have been delicious, we really like their wine and beer selection, and the staff is so nice. Plus they have a kids menu, so it’s family friendly..
Had lunch today at El Puerto at San Pedro 14 in Centro just off of Canal.
It was wonderful. Had the shrimp salad which was delicious and a beautiful
presentation. Also very reasonably priced.
I highly recommend El Puerto where I had the best seafood for lunch yesterday I have ever had at a restaurant in SMA . All was superb! It is at San Pedro 14, on short block between Umaran and Canal. I can’t wait to return to try all other ceviches and items on their varied menu. My dining companion was so impressed she ordered more to take home. They do not have wines but I am certain they will allow you to bring your own.

I had a wonderful experience today when I visited again El Puerto for lunch, the recently opened seafood restaurant in San Pedro #14, between Canal and Umaran. This is a must-visit stop for everyone who loves fresh and high quality authentic Veracruz style seafood.
The owner and chef comes directly from Lorenzillo’s, a world renowned restaurant in Cancun, well-known for their live lobster. He worked there for 17 years and just came into town, bringing along his expertise in handling and preparing fish and seafood.
I would totally recommend Puerto Escondido, a delicious salmon carpaccio with olive oil and rosemary on Melba toasts. Aguachiles, six styles of ceviches, especially Teresa, with six different seafood creatures, tiger’s milk and a green fried banana. You must try the live chocolate clams that are to die for, live fresh oysters, and a Black Ceviche based with calamari ink that will make your senses go bananas!
Let’s try to support the owners of new restaurants that are giving us high quality alternatives that can’t be found easily in San Miguel, these people deserve a hand…and, trust me, you won’t regret it!!
