More than just a restaurant, Via Orgánica forms part of a local non-profit organization that runs both a nearby organic farm and a school designed to promote sustainable farming techniques, fair trade and environmentally friendly living. The winner of numerous guidebook plaudits, the cafe itself uses all organic produce, and serves local wines and beer from Via Orgánica’s own microbrewery. With freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices, salads, and plenty of vegetarian dishes on the menu, this is the place to come for a taco detox. Breakfast is also a big attraction, with options including pancakes with fresh fruit and homemade granola. More produce from the farm is available from the whole food shop on site.
Via Organica is located in a groovy, art-y barrio on the north side of San Miguel (in Colonia Guadalupe). The store is much bigger than Natura and they have the largest selection of organic foods in San Miguel. They sell produce, meats, cheeses and other dairy products (or substitutes), packaged products, condiments and many items made in-house (like salsas, condiments, baked goods, etc.). They also have a small organic restaurant in the back. Via Organica is owned by a non-profit co-op that also has an organic farm. We like to support them. However, because it is a co-op, the place is not well staffed (the employees do not seem very helpful or interested). When we have time, we usually walk to Via Organica (it’s a 20 to 30 minute walk from Casa GGG) and take a cab home. The store is a little difficult to find, though – so you might want to take a cab the first time, or if you’re in a hurry.
