My mother with dementia has been at Cielito Lindo now for almost 7 years. The ratio of caretakers to residents is very high; 4 x more than the facility she was at in the states. they are all extremely caring and professional. Many have learned English in the time we’ve been there. The food is nutritional and tasty. There are exercises every morning and games, bingo, meditation, “spa” treatments or some kind of activity in the afternoons. She has her own private room and bathroom, and is always well groomed and up even as her disease has inevitably progressed. Because of Covid there is not an on-site doctor at the moment, but for the rest of the six years she has been there there was always one there five days a week. I highly recommend Cielito Lindo.
My mother, aged 95, and suffering from dementia arrived at CL in December of 2017. There was much happiness and many people to greet her but the problem was that very few spoke English. The administrator, Alejandra, who is also the daughter in law of the developer of Los Labradores and Cielito Lindo, promised much and delivered little. She talked about outings and a great “psychologically appropriate” program. She raved about the doctor who was there 5 days a week, 8 hours a day and the information we would receive from him weekly. The doctor rarely came out of his office or stopped using his computer and I never saw him interacting with the residents unless he was eating his lunch. The physicologist who was in charge of the entertainment program hurt her leg and was gone for 3 months with no replacement. I requested meeting after meeting to no avail. There is no “program” on the weekends and residents are placed in front of the TV for “movie time”. Finally after 6 months I removed my mother. As with any facility they have you visit when it is scheduled and they will show you what you want to see. It would be lovely if they said, “don’t worry about an appointment, just drop by anytime—we are always here.”
On the positive, there was a wonderful physical therapist who worked with my mother 3 times a week and also had great programs in the thermal pools. This all cost extra, of course. The staff including the director of nursing, Fabiola, and the assistant to the administrator, Carmen, were wonderful. The environment is exceptionally clean and the food was great. It is difficult to believe that interaction for dementia patients can be adequate or therapeutic when it is not in their language. I am estimating, but I believe 85% of the residents spoke English.
