Since 1982 House + House Architects have crafted intimate, personal architecture, producing a diverse body of work reflecting their passion for site specific, well choreographed buildings in California, Mexico, and the Caribbean. In their humane and handcrafted modernism Cathi and Steven House think with infused spatial color, inclusive boundaries and sculpted natural light, yielding environments where the passage is as important as the arrival. Committed to sustainability and green building, their work focuses on enduring design principles incorporating natural light and ventilation, passive solar heating, grey/rain water systems, recycled materials, and the development of micro-climates with strong connections between indoor and outdoor spaces. House + House has received more than 50 design awards and their work has been featured in numerous national and international publications. Extensive travels throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America have molded Cathi and Steven into architects with poetic insight into the use of light and shadow, movement and pause, place and embrace. Cathi and Steven have lectured extensively throughout the United States and Mexico and have both served on the Dean’s Advisory Board for the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech. They have established CASA, The Center for Architecture, Sustainability + Art, a new architecture study abroad program based in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, recently designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
