The cost of vacationing in cities such as San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato has risen to the point of being almost equal in price with beach or international destinations, said the president of the Mexican Federation of Tourism Associations in Guanajuato, Lilian Cerrillo.
This situation derives from the fact that they bet on the search for the so-called high profile tourism or top tourism, which makes it very expensive for tourists to spend a night in the state’s heritage cities, since if compared to beach destinations it is on a par.
The president of Fematur in Guanajuato said that not being expensive in the attractions offered by the state, does not mean that it is not good, so it is necessary to better profile the segments of tourists that should be attracted.
“It is between the tourism we want and the tourism we have, we are wasting the tourism we had that, although it is not of wide profile, it was the one that visited us, those people stopped consuming us because they were looking for the high profile, in which we go out in comparison with international markets the overnight stay in Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende or Leon is more expensive than in other destinations.
“We must profile better, not because we are not expensive we are not good, we have to make people attractive to recover the home visitors that we lost,” she said.
Lilian Cerillo regretted that they are losing the tourists that were already won by wanting to focus only on high-profile tourism in the Heritage Cities, as well as in the bulk of activities that are offered.
In comparison, traveling to Puerto Vallarta with everything included in a 4-day and three-night package has an average cost of 9 thousand pesos per person, but if the same exercise is done with a 4-star hotel in Guanajuato, the cost per night is between 3,500 and 5,000 pesos, to which food expenses should be added.
Also, according to market prices, it is cheaper to travel seven days to Colombia with food, transportation, and experiences, than to travel four days to San Miguel de Allende.
For this reason, he urged to look for prices that allow the recovery of the tourist flow in the state.
