205 years after his birth, San Miguel de Allende honored the memory of Ignacio Ramírez “El Nigromante”.
Commemorating one of the illustrious sanmiguelenses considered a historical milestone in this city Forge of National Independence, the Public Administration held a civic act in honor of his birth in 1818, as well as his life and work outstanding in the period of the War of Reform, which occurred in the second half of the nineteenth century.
As a faithful custom, the Municipality recognized the work done by one of the iconic characters, who sowed roots of justice in his native territory and, with his legacy in today’s generations, left his mark on the history of Mexico.
“El Nigromante”, as Juan Ignacio Paulino Ramírez Calzada was known, also called “The Mexican Voltaire”, was a Mexican writer, journalist and politician, who stood out for his contribution to the liberal movement, ensuring the rights of the most vulnerable Mexicans and considered as the initiator of the secular State in Mexico.
It was the councilor, Enedina Correa, who pointed out the virtues of this sanmiguelense and his transcendence in nineteenth-century Mexico: “On a day like today, Juan Ignacio Paulino Calzada, better known as “The Necromancer”, was born here in our beloved San Miguel. The evocation of his name refers us to a time when, for man and politician, honor, loyalty and friendship were behavioral axis. Today we remember an endearing journalist, a politician of knowledge. Ramírez is an icon of Mexican liberalism, his political creed and his causes seem genetic. In Mexico City he stood out from the school of San Gregorio, hence his conviction to ensure the rights of the most vulnerable, and then translate them into different legal texts especially in the Fundamental Order of 1857 ».
During this civic act, there was the presence of the municipal authorities headed by President Mauricio Trejo, represented by the trustee Faviola Correa and accompanied by the councilors Rafael Ramírez, Mary Ortiz, Carlos González, Carlos Olvera and Silvia Guerrero, as well as the directors of Comude José Cruz González and Imajsma Genaro Sánchez.
As part of this commemorative ceremony, the official war band “Guardias”, in the company of the students of the primary school “El Nigromante” and the municipal authorities, made the journey from the kiosk of the Main Garden to the house of this character in Umarán # 38, where they placed an Honor Guard.
Commemorating the legacy of “El Nigromante”, the Municipal Administration honors the memory of the illustrious sanmiguelenses who, with their contributions, make the current and future generations of San Miguel de Allende live better every day.
