The attraction of San Miguel de Allende is not only the city center and its colonial architecture, but also the natural and medicinal phenomenon that hides beneath the earth: the hot springs.

This municipality, which is considered a world heritage site by UNESCO, is surrounded by hot springs. Spas on the outskirts of the urban area offer a space for rest, relaxation and also healing.

Hot springs bring health benefits to people who use them, but before talking about them, you have to understand how hot springs work.

Thermal waters are water with high temperatures that arise in areas of tectovolcanic activity, which are mainly located “mainly on the boundaries between plates where the increase in temperature with respect to depth is very high,” explains the UNAM.

Thermal waters spring from the earth in the form of springs, fumaroles, geysers, hot pools, vaporizing soils and mud pools, according to the aforementioned study. In Mexico there are more than 4,000 places with hot springs.
