Americans living abroad do not receive Medicare benefits, even if they’ve paid into it. DA wants to change that. We’ve created a survey to help us demonstrate to Congress that all citizens who paid into the system should receive the benefits that they’ve been paying for.

We are asking for YOUR assistance – this will help us gather the information we need to engage in legislative advocacy with the U.S. Congress and Health and Human Services Administration to expand our rights.

We are interested in ALL our members’ Medicare status, even those who are not eligible.  

In May 2021, Democrats Abroad unanimously voted to promote Medicare Portability and create a Medicare Portability Task Force. Medicare is a benefit that Americans accrue after working sufficient periods of time for U.S. employers – the catch is that the benefits may only be used inside the United States.

This means that Americans overseas pay into the system and cannot enjoy the benefits unless they travel back to the United States. For many people this is not practical. For many others, they are left without adequate health insurance after retirement overseas and it impacts their decision whether to remain overseas.

Please note: this survey has been anonymized. This means that responses to this survey do not include the respondents’ IP address or location data in the results. Additionally, responses are disconnected from the contact who submitted the response. This allows us to send out additional survey links when requested, while keeping those responses separate from the identity of the person it was sent to.
