SMA is the main lettuce producer in the center of the country

Guanajuato maintains its national leadership in lettuce production with an annual volume of 138 thousand tons, and in 2021 alone, producers received $4,171 pesos per ton marketed, which indicates that it is a highly profitable crop that generates a large economic benefit for the state.

This was reported by Paulo Bañuelos Rosales, Guanajuato’s Secretary of Agrifood and Rural Development, who highlighted that the main producing municipalities are San Miguel de Allende, Juventino Rosas and Dolores Hidalgo.

“For more than a decade, Guanajuato has remained in first place in lettuce production and without a doubt it is a crop that brings us a great economic benefit and for which we are recognized nationally and internationally. In 2021, which is the latest data we have, we had profits of $575 million 4 thousand 62 pesos and our main customer was the United States,” said the state official.

Bañuelos said that below Guanajuato, is Zacatecas with a production of 96 thousand 97 tons; and in third place is Puebla, with 65 thousand 898 tons produced in 2021, according to the Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP).

He added that 6,678 hectares of this crop were planted last year, distributed in 27 municipalities in the State, all in irrigated plots. San Miguel de Allende is the main producer with 21,996 tons, followed by Juventino Rosas with 20,80 tons and then Dolores Hidalgo with 10,338 tons.

According to SIAP, Guanajuato generates a quarter of the income from the sale of the vegetable. The price of the crop in the state increased by 8.9% compared to 2020, so producers received 4,171 pesos per ton marketed.
