San Miguel Literary Sala Presents
August 2021 Online Writing Workshops
By Dena Cruz and Joy Sablatura
Michael Jordan, one of the best basketball players in the history of the game, once said:
“You can practice shooting eight hours a day, but if your technique is wrong, then all you become is very good at shooting the wrong way. Get the fundamentals down and the level of everything you do will rise.”
The San Miguel Literary Sala, renowned for its impressive faculty, will teach you the fundamentals of writing and how to get your manuscript published. In addition to our Distinguished Speaker Series Presentation: Ask Me About Mexico! a presentation with Sam Quinones & Alfredo Corchado, August 22 at 6:00–7:30 PM, the Sala offers the following August workshops to assist you in taking your creative writing to the next level:
Workshops:
In a workshop, taught in two 90-minute sessions, held on August 16 & 18, 3:00–4:30,
Laura Juliet Wood will teach a class entitled Metaphor in Flight: The Leap of the Subconscious in Poetry. Learn what the greats (Bly, Garcia Lorca, Dickenson, Bishop and others) have to say on the subject and try it yourself in several writing exercises. Tickets: $80.00 USD.
In Writer’s Toolbox, taught by Joseph Boyden, author of critically acclaimed Three Day Road and Through Black Spruce, you will open up the writer’s toolbox and examine some of the contents, including point of view, suspension of disbelief, scene, summary, and dialogue. Taught in two 90- minute sessions, this class will be held on August 16 & 18, 5:30–7:00. Tickets: $80.00 USD.
A Moveable Feast: Writing about Travel and Food. Whether you’re interested in writing about the most expensive restaurant in Paris or the 75-year-old hamburger joint in your hometown, this is the class for you. Diana Spechler will discuss character development, how to describe food without resorting to clichés. This workshop, taught in two 90- minute sessions, will be held on August 17 & 19 3:00–4:30. Tickets: $80.00 USD.
Humor is perspective. In this workshop, 10 Ways to Punch Up Your Writing with Humor, Mark Saunders, author of Nobody Knows the Spanish I Speak, will teach you ten ways to incorporate humor into your own writing. In addition to doing quick exercises to help spark your sense of humor, you will examine humor writing techniques used by some of literature’s most accomplished humorists. This workshop, taught in two 90-minute sessions, will be held on August 17 & 19 5:30–7:00 PM. Tickets: $80.00 USD.
And as usual, the He Said, She Said series brings you a lively discussion. Is writing an Art or a Craft? Michael Bazzett & David Dykes will tackle this centuries-old question in an online conversation, entitled Writing is a Suckas Game: Art vs. Craft. This online discussion will take place on August 15, 4:00–5:00 PM CST. Tickets: Free or donate what you wish.
Single Ticket Prices: $80.00 USD (Packages are available)
